Classical Way Passes
September 13, 2005
Hunterton Farm, Inc. today announced that international trotting star Classical Way has been euthanized due to infirmities of old age.
A legend of the sport, the daughter of Speedy Scot-Kerry Way, bred by Clarence F. Gaines of Sherburne, N.Y., won 33 races and earned $715,499 over her illustrious racing career.
Retired as the fastest trotting mare ever, Classical Way won 16 of 20 races in 1979 as a three-year-old. While she failed to capture the Hambletonian that year she was timed in the second Hambletonian heat in 1:56.3, faster than any filly in the history of the classic event.
After dominating her division, Classical Way again tested the boys, this time defeating Hambo winner Legend Hanover in the Kentucky Futurity.
At four, Classical Way won the American Trotting Championship, the Roosevelt International and the Challenge Cup against international rivals. She went on to capture the American Trotting Classic at Hollywood Park lowering the 1 1/8 mile world record at the same time.
In October of 1980, Classical Way time trialed in 1:55.2, making her the fastest trotting mare ever.
After being shipped to Europe, the mare won the Prix de France – the final race of her incredible career.
As a broodmare, Classical Way had moderate success.
She will be forever remembered as a true champion on the racetrack.
The last owner of Classical Way was Menhammar Stuteri Ab of Sweden.
ADIEU Classical way, moi aussi je t'oublierai jamais
